Leak or burst pipe? What to do while you wait

  1. Turn off the water at the stopcock. It is usually under the kitchen sink, where the supply pipe enters the property. Turn it clockwise to close it.
  2. Keep away from wet electrics. If water has reached sockets, light fittings or the consumer unit, switch off the electricity at the consumer unit, but only if you can reach it without touching water. Never touch wet electrical fittings.
  3. Switch off your water heating. Turn off the boiler and any immersion heater.
  4. Drain the pipes. Open the cold taps and flush the toilets to empty the system and slow the leak.
  5. Limit the damage. Move belongings out of the way and catch dripping water with buckets and towels.
  6. Call a plumber. Telephone us on 01534 766314 or 07797 718728.

Questions about plumbing

Do you take on small plumbing repairs?

Yes. We handle domestic and commercial plumbing of every size, from replacing a tap washer or fixing a toilet to installing a complete new bathroom.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Turn off the water at the stopcock, switch off the boiler and any immersion heater, and keep away from any electrics the water has reached. Then telephone a plumber. See what to do while you wait.

Where is my stopcock usually found?

In most homes the internal stopcock is under the kitchen sink, close to where the water supply pipe enters the property. It can also be in a utility room, a downstairs cloakroom or under the stairs. Knowing where it is lets you turn off the water quickly if a pipe leaks.

Do you carry out commercial plumbing?

Yes. For our commercial clients we carry out plumbing and heating work on contracts of all sizes. See commercial plumbing and heating.
